Audi 48V MHEV System Diagnostics
The 48V mild-hybrid systems used in the Audi A6, A7, A8, Q7 and Q8 are built from several closely connected components. These include the 48V battery, belt starter generator, DC/DC converter, 12V electrical system, cooling system and multiple control units.
A fault stored in one module does not always identify the real source of the problem. Correct diagnosis requires checking the entire system and the communication between its components.
A common warning message is:
“Electrical system: fault. Safely stop vehicle.”

Common Audi 48V System Faults
- BSG belt starter generator failure – loss of 48V charging, electrical system warnings or sudden vehicle immobilisation.
- Coolant entering electrical components – internal short circuits, corrosion and damage to electronic modules.
- P0A7D fault code – critically low state of charge in the 48V battery.
- DC/DC converter failure – incorrect supply to the 12V electrical system and related control units.
- Locked 48V battery – the system cannot be restarted after deep discharge, collision damage or long-term storage.
- Communication faults – interrupted data exchange between the battery, BSG, converter, engine control unit and other modules.
- Start-Stop or recuperation failure – the system remains inactive despite replacement of individual components.

Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Diagnostics
In hybrid and electric vehicles, the apparent fault is often only the result of a problem located elsewhere in the system. A warning message may be caused by unstable power supply, interrupted communication, incorrect parameterisation, cooling system failure or incomplete integration after repair.
For this reason, we analyse the complete vehicle architecture rather than concentrating only on the control unit in which the fault code was stored.

Why These Faults Often Return
Replacing the component named in a fault code does not always solve the problem. The actual cause may be an unstable voltage supply, damaged wiring, coolant contamination, interrupted communication, incorrect coding or incomplete system commissioning.
