Audi RS6 C8 4.0 TFSI – P0300, P0303, P0305 and P0363 Misfire Faults

 

Engine misfires, Check Engine light, rough idle, and the smell of fuel in the engine oil? In modern twin-turbocharged V8 engines such as the 4.0 TFSI (EA825), fitted to vehicles including the Audi RS6 C8, RS7, and RS Q8, any fuel system irregularity requires immediate professional diagnostics. Otherwise, what initially appears to be a minor fault may eventually lead to severe cylinder wall damage.

 

 

An Audi RS6 C8 was brought to Szulc Motorsport after the owner reported intermittent hesitation, reduced engine power, and persistent misfires. The vehicle had previously been diagnosed elsewhere, where an official ODIS Online software update had been performed. However, the problem returned almost immediately after leaving the workshop.

 

 

Initial Diagnostics – What Did the Fault Scan Reveal?

 

 

The diagnostic process began with a complete fault memory scan. The engine control unit (ECU) contained the following Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs):

  • P0300 – Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected

  •     
  • P0303, P0305 – Misfire Detected on Cylinders 3 and 5

  •     
  • P0363 – Fuel Injection Disabled Due to Misfire Detection

The previous workshop limited the repair to an ODIS Online software update. While online factory procedures are essential for programming new control units and installing manufacturer-approved software updates, they cannot repair mechanically worn or malfunctioning components. In this case, the software update temporarily masked the issue until the ECU once again detected adaptation limits being exceeded.

 

 

Live Data Analysis

 

 

To identify the root cause without replacing parts unnecessarily, we performed a comprehensive analysis of live operating parameters using professional diagnostic equipment specifically designed for Volkswagen Audi Group (VAG) vehicles. Among the parameters evaluated were:

  • Short-Term and Long-Term Fuel Trims (STFT / LTFT)

  • Low-pressure and high-pressure fuel system pressure

Detailed fuel trim analysis revealed significant deviations on one cylinder bank, directing our attention toward the high-pressure fuel injection system.

 

 

Audi RS6 C8 4.0 TFSI Engine Borescope Inspection

 

 

In direct injection engines, excessive fuel entering the combustion chamber can wash the protective oil film from the cylinder walls. To rule out mechanical damage, we performed an internal engine inspection using a professional borescope.

 

 

The borescope inspection revealed traces of unburned fuel on the piston crowns, while the condition of the combustion chambers indicated an abnormal fuel delivery process. Fortunately, the cylinder walls remained in excellent condition, and early, accurate diagnostics prevented further engine damage.

Why Was an Engine Rebuild Not Necessary?

 

 

Although fuel contamination inside the cylinders and fuel dilution of the engine oil were confirmed, our inspection found no damage to the pistons, valves, or cylinder walls that would justify a complete engine rebuild. After eliminating the root cause, cleaning the combustion chambers, and replacing the engine oil, there was no technical reason to disassemble the engine.

 

 

Replacing Fuel Injectors in the Audi RS6 C8 4.0 TFSI

 

 

Our diagnostics confirmed that injector operation was outside normal operating parameters. Following replacement, all symptoms disappeared and fuel system parameters returned to their normal operating range. On the 4.0 TFSI engine, injector replacement is a complex repair requiring intake manifold removal, high-pressure fuel line removal, and completion of all manufacturer-required adaptation procedures after installation.

 

 

Once the new genuine components had been installed and the engine oil and filter replaced, we proceeded with dynamic road testing and a complete verification of engine operating parameters.

 

 

Road Testing and Data Logging

 

 

Following completion of the repair, the vehicle underwent multiple road tests with full data logging under varying engine loads. The evaluation included continuous monitoring of misfire counters and engine performance at high load. No recurrence of DTCs P0300, P0303, P0305, or P0363 was observed. Fuel trims returned to normal values, and the engine regained smooth operation together with full factory performance.

 

 

How to Protect the 4.0 TFSI Fuel System
