
30August2026Audi A6 C8 S-Tronic DL382 – What the Previous Workshop Missed
The owner had been informed that genuine filters were installed and that every required section of the drivetrain had been fully serviced. Our inspection revealed aftermarket filters, old seals left in place and sections with no evidence of previous servicing.
This was not a minor difference in servicing methods. The actual condition of the components did not match the scope of work presented to the customer.
Aftermarket filters instead of the declared genuine parts
After removing the filters, we found that aftermarket substitutes had been installed instead of the genuine parts declared to the owner. Some of the seals also carried markings and production dates corresponding to the period when the vehicle was manufactured.
If a complete service requiring disassembly of a particular transmission section had genuinely been performed, the old seals should not have remained in place. Some of the drain and inspection plugs also showed no typical signs of previous removal, while the condition of the oil did not confirm that the entire declared service had been completed.
An aftermarket part is not automatically a poor-quality part. However, a customer must not be told that genuine parts were installed when different components were actually used. The owner should know exactly which parts were fitted and which work was performed.
Why did the DL382 jerk after gear changes?
The jerking was not caused by one isolated component. It resulted from several irregularities that collectively affected transmission operation.
Old seals had been left in the gearbox, while the installed filters did not match the genuine parts declared to the customer. The appearance and odour of the drained oil also differed from the genuine fluid and the verified alternatives we normally use. We could not therefore confirm that the correct fluid had previously been installed. Another transmission section contained old, visibly degraded oil.
An additional issue was the oil pump in the mechanical section of the DL382. Its construction includes a plastic impeller that gradually wears over time. As pump performance decreases, lubrication of the mechanical section deteriorates. The synchronisers then operate under more difficult conditions and require more time to equalise rotational speeds correctly.
We found no burnt or damaged synchronisers. Their operation had, however, been slowed by the combined effect of unsuitable filters, old seals, the condition of the fluids and reduced pump performance. Only the complete picture explained the jolt felt after gear changes.
We performed a complete service of every required transmission section, used the correct fluids and replaced the filters, seals and oil pump in the mechanical section. Once the mechanical work had been completed, we performed the transmission adaptation and verified its operating parameters during a road test.
quattro Ultra drivetrain repair
A separate problem was the drivetrain bind-up experienced while turning and making tight manoeuvres. The quattro Ultra unit was disassembled, thoroughly cleaned and inspected.
We replaced the quattro Ultra clutch packs, reassembled the unit and performed the required adaptation. The condition of this assembly and correctly completed adaptation directly affect smooth engagement of the rear axle and the vehicle’s behaviour during tight turns.
Rear final drive oil change and adaptation
The repair did not end with the DL382 transmission and quattro Ultra unit. We also changed the oil in the rear final drive and performed its adaptation.
The condition of the rear final drive and its adaptation values are also relevant when diagnosing drivetrain bind-up, resistance and jerking while turning. The complete drivetrain must therefore be assessed as one interacting system rather than focusing only on the gearbox.
Work performed
- diagnostics of the DL382 transmission and complete drivetrain,
- verification of the previously declared service,
- inspection of the filters, seals, fluids and individual transmission sections,
- complete oil service of all required DL382 sections,
- replacement of the filters and seals,
- replacement of the oil pump in the mechanical transmission section,
- disassembly and thorough cleaning of the quattro Ultra unit,
- replacement of the quattro Ultra clutch packs,
- adaptation of the DL382 transmission and quattro Ultra system,
- rear final drive oil change and adaptation,
- road test and verification of operating parameters after repair.
After the complete repair, the transmission began changing gears correctly and smoothly. The drivetrain bind-up and jerking previously experienced while turning and making tight manoeuvres also disappeared.
A complete service means more than an oil change
The DL382 transmission, quattro Ultra system and rear final drive are separate areas of the drivetrain. Each requires the correct parts, fluids and procedures. A statement that the “gearbox oil was changed” does not automatically mean that all these assemblies were serviced correctly.
This case also shows that not every workshop correctly understands the design of the DL382 and its interaction with the quattro Ultra drivetrain. The work described to the customer does not always correspond to the work actually performed on the vehicle.
At Szulc Motorsport, we inspect the complete drivetrain rather than one selected component. We photographically document the condition of removed parts, the components used and the work performed. The customer receives clear information about what was inspected, what was replaced and what caused the problem.
If diagnostics confirm that the transmission is mechanically and hydraulically sound, but its factory control strategy still selects higher gears too early or keeps the engine at excessively low RPM, an individual TCU calibration may be considered. This is a separate service and must never be used to conceal a transmission fault.
