NEW BENCH MODE FOR ECUs DELPHI CRD3 MERCEDES WITH MICRO TC1793 / TC1797

Mercedes-Benz Delphi CRD3 – ECU Cloning and Programming in Bench Mode

We have expanded our Mercedes-Benz ECU programming capabilities. The new Bench Mode protocol allows us to read, write, copy, clone and transfer data from Delphi CRD3 control units equipped with TC1793 and TC1797 microprocessors.

Delphi CRD3 engine control units are used in many Mercedes-Benz diesel models. When an ECU is damaged, communication is lost, a replacement control unit is required or a backup needs to be created, access to the full memory content is essential.

Bench Mode allows us to work directly with the ECU after it has been removed from the vehicle. Depending on the hardware version and condition of the control unit, data can be read and written without opening the ECU housing.

Reading and writing Delphi CRD3 control units

The new protocol supports Mercedes-Benz Delphi CRD3 ECUs equipped with Infineon TC1793 and TC1797 microprocessors.

The available functions include:

  • reading and writing TC1793 microprocessor memory,
  • reading and writing TC1797 microprocessor memory,
  • reading and writing internal EEPROM memory,
  • reading and writing external 25LC256 EEPROM memory,
  • creating a complete ECU data backup,
  • copying data to a replacement control unit,
  • ECU cloning,
  • data transfer from the original ECU to another unit,
  • Recovery after interrupted or unsuccessful programming,
  • automatic checksum correction.

Mercedes-Benz ECU cloning and data transfer

A complete memory read makes it possible to secure the contents of the original control unit and, where technically possible, transfer the required data to another ECU.

Customers often refer to this service as ECU cloning, ECU copying, transferring the software or copying the complete contents from the old control unit to a new or used replacement.

The exact scope of data transfer depends on the hardware version, part numbers, memory layout and the condition of the original control unit. Before programming begins, both ECUs must be compared and their compatibility confirmed.

Not every used control unit can be installed directly. In some cases, the entire memory must be copied. In others, only selected data required for vehicle authorisation and engine operation needs to be transferred.

When is a Delphi CRD3 ECU copy required?

Reading, copying or cloning the ECU may be required in situations such as:

  • failure of the original engine control unit,
  • loss of ECU communication in the vehicle,
  • replacement of the control unit with a new or used ECU,
  • transfer of data to a working replacement module,
  • creation of a backup before repair or software modification,
  • interrupted programming and the need to recover the ECU,
  • repair of corrupted or damaged ECU software.

Recovery after failed programming

The Recovery function may allow communication to be restored and the software to be rewritten after an interrupted programming process or an unsuccessful write operation.

The possibility of recovering the control unit depends on the type of failure. If only the memory contents are corrupted, correct programming may restore the ECU. If the power supply, processor or electronic components are damaged, hardware repair may be required first.

Supported Delphi CRD3 versions

Bench Mode supports the following control unit families:

  • Delphi CRD3.1x,
  • Delphi CRD3.2x,
  • Delphi CRD3.3x,
  • Delphi CRD3.4x,
  • Delphi CRD3.5x,
  • Delphi CRD3.6x,
  • Delphi CRD3.7x,
  • Delphi CRD3PLUS.A0,
  • Delphi CRD3.E,
  • Delphi CRD3.E1,
  • Delphi CRD3.F1,
  • Delphi CRD3P.B0,
  • Delphi CRD3P.C0,
  • Delphi CRD3P.D1.

Before the service, we verify the complete ECU number, hardware designation, processor type and compatibility of the replacement control unit. The CRD3 designation alone is not sufficient to confirm that cloning is possible.

Bench Mode without opening the ECU

Bench Mode communication is established directly through the ECU connector. When the control unit communicates correctly, this method allows programming without opening the housing or disturbing the original seal.

This solution is particularly useful for creating backups, repairing software, programming replacement control units and transferring data between compatible ECUs.

Compatibility verification before cloning

Before copying data, we check the numbers and hardware versions of both control units and create a backup of the original ECU.

We do not write data to a replacement control unit without first confirming compatibility. This reduces the risk of communication faults, starting problems or software and hardware mismatch.
